Govt Lists 18 Universities Approved to Offer Law Degrees

The government, through the Council of Legal Education, has listed 18 universities across the country approved to offer Bachelor's and Master's of Laws degrees in Kenya.

Through a newspaper notice issued on Tuesday, July 8, CLE released the full list of higher institutions, which included the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, and Strathmore University.

UoN, Kenyatta, and Strathmore were issued licenses to provide Bachelor of Laws degree education valid until December 2025, September 2028, and November 2027, respectively.

In addition, the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA), Maseno University, and South Eastern University of Kenya were also issued with LLB legal education licenses valid till November 2027.

Moi University, Africa Nazarene, and Chuka University joined the UoN law campus in getting licenses valid until December this year.

Riara University, UMMA University, Egerton University, and Kabarak University were awarded LLB legal education licenses valid until September 2028, September 2025, and June 2026, respectively.

Other universities issued with licenses to provide LLB degrees include the University of Embu, Daystar University-Athi River Law Campus, Kisii University, and Mount Kenya University (MKU). For the four institutions, their licenses will expire in April 2029.

Aside from licenses in the Bachelor’s degree, CLE also approved four universities to provide a Master's in Law degree, as well as the expiry of their licenses. 

The four include Strathmore University (April 2030), MKU (March 2026), CUEA (September 2028), and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology-Law campus (JKUAT) (June 2028).

The council further detailed learning institutions licensed to provide the law program at the diploma level.

Mount Kenya University, Kisii University, and CUEA were granted licenses to offer a law program at the diploma level, with their licenses running until April 2029 and November 2027, respectively. The Kenya School of Law (KSL) was also listed, with a license valid until April 2029.

Notably, Mount Kenya University and CUEA are the only institutions to be given licenses to provide law programs across all three levels—master's, bachelor's, and diploma.
