A multi-agency security team has arrested eight people in Kakamega and Vihiga counties in a security operation against illicit brew amid President William Ruto's new war on drug abuse.
The multi-agency team nabbed and destroyed 50,000 litres of Kangara, dismantled 613 brewing apparatus and recovered 350 litres of Chang’aa.
The police have placed the suspects in custody, awaiting arraignment in court.
The crackdown against illicit brews by the multi-agency team was led by the Western Regional Police Commander, Issa Mohamed.
The operation targeted the Shikumu location in Kakamega County and the Kilingili location in Vihiga County.
The police have revealed that the operation further covered three villages of Lwanaswa, Kaluni and Ishieywe, where suspected brewing activities had been reported.
The operation comes a day after President William Ruto chaired a multi-agency meeting at State House in deliberation to intensify the fight against drug abuse.
After the meeting, the President announced that additional officers are being deployed to the Anti-Narcotic Unit with the requisite training and logistical support.
The President also announced the establishment of rehabilitation centres in all 47 counties across the country.
Ruto also announced the deployment of multi-agency border teams in five key entry points to disrupt drug trafficking and organised crime.
The President began this fight against drugs in his New Year's address, where he announced his commitment to fight drug abuse as part of his goal to take Kenya to a first-world country.
The National Police Service has committed to eliminating narcotics and illicit alcohol in line with the President's directive.
