Police Fire Teargas at Raila's Office

Police officers on Friday afternoon lobbed teargas at Capitol Hill - the building which hosts offices for National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

The officers fired the teargas as NASA leaders who had converged were preparing to head into the CBD to hold anti-IEBC demos.

There was heavy police presence in the area as they dispersed the leaders and few supporters who were assembling to head to the CBD.

During the ensuing melee, police were also seen harassing an NTV journalist who was covering the event before confiscating his camera.

Prior to the incident, Siaya Senator James Orengo reiterated that they would carry on with their protests despite the government barring them from doing so.

In Kisumu, gunshots rented the air around Kondele as police attempted to break-up the anti-IEBC demos and blocked the protesters from entering Kisumu central business district.

The situation was similar in Mombasa after leaders who took to the streets were dispersed by police before they could mobilise more people.

On Thursday, acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i banned all demos in major cities on grounds that the protesters were robbing people and destroying businesses.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome echoed the same sentiments saying NASA should use the correct avenues to seek approval for demos.

He reiterated that the protests held today remained unlawful and anyone caught would face the full force of the law.
