Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja Opposes Fred Matiangi's Move to Ban NASA Demos

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has stated that he will table a bill in parliament to have National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters allowed to demonstrate in designated areas around the CBD.

Speaking during the annual general meeting for Lap trust at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Sakaja stated that the constitution gives people the right to demonstrate as long as they are peaceful and don't engage in unlawful acts.

Sakaja further urged police not to use excessive force on demonstrators. He, however, noted that the Kenyans had a right to carry out businesses and protection from the government.

"The moment any of the demonstrators carry a weapon, we have seen them with stones, robbing and looting- we will not let them demonstrate,” Sakaja stated.

This comes after Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i banned NASA demonstrations in the Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu Central Business Districts.

Several NASA leaders faulted the CS's directive noting Kenyans do not need his permission to enjoy their right to peacefully demonstrate and picket.

On Friday police swarmed the city's streets prior to the protests, ready to implement the government's order on demos.

Leaders allied to the National Super Alliance (NASA) in Mombasa County were teargassed as soon as they gathered to start the demos.

Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi, Senator Mohammed Faki and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir were dispersed together with their supporters as they converged on Uhuru Gardens along Moi Avenue in the coastal city.

The protesters scampered for safety, with police in hot pursuit while the leaders later gathered to condemn the incident.
