Presidential Candidate Removed From Ballot

Former Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo has been left out of the repeat presidential poll after he was declared bankrupt.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair Wafula Chebukati added the names of Dr. Ekuru Aukot, Abduba Dida, Joseph Nyagah, Michael Wainaina and Japheth Kavinga.

The five candidates join President Uhuru Kenyatta of Jubilee Party and National Super Alliance's Raila Odinga.

Jirongo was declared destitute by the court and therefore, failed to meet one of the requirements to run for the Presidency as per the Constitution.

Chebukati stated: “The candidate Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo is not eligible to participate in the fresh presidential election as he does not qualify under articles 137 and 99 (2) (f) of the Constitution.”

The High Court found that Mr Jirongo was unable to service his debts.

Thirdway Alliance successfully petitioned the High Court and secured the inclusion of Dr Ekuru Aukot in the fresh election and, by extension, all other candidates who took part in the nullified poll.

Alliance for Real Change has confirmed Abduba Dida will run for office as its candidate while Japheth Kaluyu will contest independently.

There are several cases in different courts where Mr Jirongo is being pursued for failing to pay money advanced to him.

The former MP was recently compelled to pay Central Organization of Trade Union (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli Sh110 Million that was lent to him.
