IEBC Makes New Announcement on Cancelling Election in NASA Strongholds

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has started visiting National Super Alliance (NASA) strongholds to establish the effect that the coalition's 'No elections' declaration will have on preparations for the October 26th poll.

Speaking after meeting Returning Officers from Nyanza, Commissioner Roselyne Akombe divulged that they were taking the coalition's call seriously and would consult widely on the issue.

She stated: "The trip was to make an assessment on the ground and listen to the county election managers in the counties over the issue of no elections.

"We will be forced to collect public views and consult internally to determine whether there will be elections or no elections," Akombe added.

Akombe further noted that she was unable to pre-empt whether or not there would be an election on October 26th.

She, however, maintained that the Commission was ready to conduct a credible election on the scheduled date.

NASA has declared that there will be no election as they have no faith in the electoral body as currently constituted to conduct a free and fair election.

They followed up the announcement with the withdrawal of former Premier Raila Odinga's candidature from the repeat poll.

A letter from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to the Wafula Chebukati-led body notified them of the withdrawal, but Mr Odinga has since refused to sign the Form 24A that would finalize his pulling out from the race.

The electoral body announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Odinga will be the only candidates to feature in the re-configured Kenya Integrated Elections Management Sytem (KIEMS) due to time constraints, with the other five candidates only featured on the ballot papers.
