No Election Will Take Place in My Constituency - MP Declares

Mwingi Member of Parliament Dr Mutemi Mulyungi has declared that the presidential election will not take place in his constituency.

Mulyungi maintained that if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) does not make timely changes, no election would take place in Mwingi.

The legislator's sentiments come on the same day Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode stated there will be no elections in the county on October 26.

Okode stated that he would lead all MCAs to ensure no voting takes place if the electoral agency insists on pushing through with its plans.

“The law is very clear that elections must be conducted in each of the 290 constituencies and since NASA has withdrawn from the race yet IEBC is still insisting it will go ahead with the elections, we want to show them they will not be allowed to continue with their illegalities in our county,” added the speaker.

His assertions add to fears by the electoral body over the security of their staff who are set to participate in the repeat polls.

Reports indicate that a number of returning Officers, Presiding Officers and their deputies were reluctant on being engaged in the repeat polls over security concerns.

Two weeks ago, Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga and Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi asked Siaya residents not to participate in the repeat presidential election, until NASA’s “irreducible minimums” are met.

Rasanga reiterated that he would spearhead demonstrations in the county until the IEBC acts on his party's demands for the repeat election to take place.

The Governor added that if there would be an election on October 26 without heeding to NASA’s demands, it would be equivalent to having Jubilee Party elections.

On Sunday, IEBC gave a comprehensive response to the opposition's requests and agreed to meet 20 of its 34 conditions.
