Government Explains Why it Raided Jimmy Wanjigi's Muthaiga Home

The Government has explained the reasons why it raided the house of prominent businessman Jimmy Wanjigi in Muthaiga.

Addressing journalists at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC), Government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe noted that the raid was launched on the city tycoon as a matter of national interest.

Mr Kiraithe further noted that the raid is not political but a clampdown on a criminal, adding that "when you hear that illegal firearms have been recovered from anybody, this threatens the security of each and every Kenyan."

“The police are doing a very simple task, which is not politically motivated. This raid means we have a criminal in our midst," he stated.

On Tuesday morning, police officers broke into his home and raided his offices in Westlands with the intention of arresting him after guns and bullets were seized at a Malindi home linked to the businessman.

His whereabouts are still unknown as the officers insist he has sought refuge within his Muthaiga house.

According to the search warrants, the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was also granted permission to raid Wanjigi's Caramel Club at ABC place along Waiyaki way.

Reacting to the raid, Wanjigi moved to court seeking anticipatory bail on any arrest issued on him and his wife, Irene Nzisa.

He wants orders barring police and DPP from trespassing and entering his private residence despite having arrest warrants.

In the suit filed through lawyer Jackson Awele, the tycoon stated that the DPP and police officers entered his Muthaiga house on account of suspected criminal activities in his home in Malindi

"The raid has been concocted to embarrass and falsely accuse me and is meant to settle political scores," he stated.

A month ago, the businessman went to Gigiri Police Station to report that his life was in danger.

He later wrote to the  Inspector General (IG) Joseph Boinnet seeking protection at his cost.

NASA politicians led by Siaya Senator James Orengo claimed that the businessman is being targeted due to his links with the Opposition.
