IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati Advised to Go to Supreme Court

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has been advised to go back to the Supreme Court in the light of the current political stand-off ahead of the repeat election.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju told the IEBC boss to seek an interpretation from Chief Justice David Maraga.

" We have no authority to decide when an election should be carried out. It is upon the Supreme Court to interpret it. If Mr Chebukati has any issues with the election, he should go back to the Supreme Court," he explained.

Mr Tuju further faulted Chebukati for attempting to mediate between the candidates - President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga.

"We want to put it respectfully to Mr Chebukati, that your role is that of a referee, and not a mediator. As a referee, the IEBC should not ask the candidates when to have an election," he added.

He further stated that the Opposition coalition should also go to the same court that called for the repeat election.

"If NASA leaders have a problem with the election, they are at liberty to go back to the Supreme Court," he stated.

On Thursday, Kiambu Member of Parliament Jude Njomo filed a new petition against the NASA leader seeking to have the court declare Mr Odinga's withdrawal from the repeat presidential election illegal.

Mr Njomo asserted that the NASA leader's declaration cannot be held as true because he did not follow the correct procedure.
