Jubilee MP Asks IEBC to Cancel Election

Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has stated that he will move to court to have the repeat election slated for Saturday in four counties called off.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday put off repeat presidential poll in four counties in Nyanza citing security challenges.

Efforts to reach the legislator proved futile as our text messages went unreplied.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that voting had failed to take off in Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay and Siaya due to protests staged by supporters of the National Super Alliance.

The repeat poll was rescheduled to October 28 but has since been postponed to a later date.

“Security is not in the hands of the commission. We were promised security by the Inspector-General of the Police and the government agencies and once we get feedback from them we shall be able to see how we can manage the movement of materials and the security of our officers in the affected counties,” remarked Mr Chebukati.

All the four counties are strongholds of NASA leader Raila Odinga, who informally withdrew from the race and asked his supporters to stay away from polling stations.

Leaders of the Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) Church also asked IEBC to change the date of postponed polls from Saturday to another day of the week.

The church explained that conducting elections on October 28 in the affected counties would bar worshippers from voting.

“We wish to bring to your attention that this date falls on Saturday which is a day of worship to over three million Adventists in Kenya.

"This will deny them their constitutional right to vote. While we support your move to give the Kenyans who did not vote today another chance, we request you to do it on another day other than Saturday,” read part of the statement.
