EXCLUSIVE: MP Alice Wahome Speaks On Harassing IEBC Official

Kandara Member of Parliament, Alice Wahome has replied to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after the commission issued a statement calling for her arrest.

The statement circulated by the electoral body urged the relevant authorities to probe and arrest the Kandara MP for harassing an election official in her constituency.

In an exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Mrs Wahome stated that she had not been served any papers by IEBC and would therefore not respond to their allegations.

“I will only respond when they (IEBC) call me. Why are they issuing statements yet they do not know what happened?” Mrs Wahome lamented.

She refuted allegations by Kandara Constituency Returning Officer Martin Malonza who claims the legislator harassed him while he was on duty. A video circulating online shows Mrs Wahome confronting the IEBC official.

Mr Malonza claimed that the Jubilee MP accused him of rushing to deliver presidential results from the polling station without consulting her. He further recounted that Mrs Wahome blocked the road he was using and proceeded to grab him and shove him around.

However, the legislator gave a contradicting narrative to the events, claiming that she did not harass the Returning Officer. Mrs Wahome further maintained that she was composed and only wanted to check on the results that Mr Malonzo had indicated.

“I did not harass him, that is not harassment. I was merely checking on the results to verify what had been recorded for the Jubilee candidate. I asked him calmly then he started shouting at me, who does that?” Mrs Wahome questioned.

“He was very rude and did not want to be asked any questions. What I did is not outside the law and it is prejudicial of IEBC to issue a statement which I have not seen by the way asking for my arrest. The returning officer was supposed to sit and explain in a calm manner not causing drama that way,” she added.

She further alleged that she was doubtful of how Mr Malonzo reacted and the video recorded made her question if the whole ordeal was not pre-planned.
