1st Presidential Petition Filed At Supreme Court

Former Kilome MP Harun Mwau has filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging the validity of the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as President-elect in the October 26 Presidential election.

Mwau has named the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as the first respondent.

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and President Kenyatta are the second and third respondents respectively.

The deadline to file petitions challenging President Kenyatta's win is set to lapse at midnight on Monday.

Civil  Society groups are expected to file more petitions later in the day.

Mwau had moved to the High Court on October 16 seeking to stop the election that was eventually held on October 26 from taking place.

He argued that the fresh election should have begun with a fresh nomination exercise by political parties.

He maintained that the validity of the election would be easy to challenge if the IEBC conducted it without party nominations first taking place.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) announced the withdrawal of Raila Odinga's candidature from the race prior to the poll.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner with 98% of all votes cast.
