Election Delayed After IEBC Machines Fail

Voting in Daraja Mbili Primary School, a polling station in Kitutu Chache South Constituency, was delayed for hours after Kenya Integrated Elections Management System (KIEMS) kits failed to work.

Voters who had made their way to the station left in protest, stating that they had other things to work on.

The by-election in Kitutu Chache South began on Tuesday with some casting their votes as early as 6 am.

Incumbent MP Richard Onyonka is running on a Ford-Kenya ticket against Orange Democratic Movement's (ODM) Samuel Omwando and Jubilee's Anthony Kibagendi.

Onyonka has stated that should he be elected, this will be his third and final term in office.

The constituency has 59,017 registered voters with 115 polling stations spread across five wards.

The Returning Officer (RO), Hilda Imbo, on Monday evening stated that everything was in place for the election and they expected polling to go on smoothly.

“We have recruited enough staff for the exercise but the challenge still remains the heavy downpour that has delayed the dispatch of election materials. We expect a huge voter turnout,” she stated.

Prior to the August 8th General Election, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the postponement of the election for Kitutu Chache South MP following the death of one of the contestants.

Jubilee Candidate Leonard Gwaro Mwamba passed away two weeks to the polls.
