Sonko Issues 2 Demands After Governor Gakuru's Death

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday issued two demands after the sudden death of Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru in a road accident along Thika-Muranga road.

While addressing a media conference at Serena Hotel, Governor Sonko called for the circumstances of the accident to be investigated extensively.

"I'm asking CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro to thoroughly investigate this incident," he stated.

Secondly, Sonko declared that the law on the succession of governors in the event of death needed to be changed.

"I'm also against that law that stated the Deputy Governor should automatically take over from the governor in the case of death.

"Like in this case, I'm told the deputy governor could be sworn in tomorrow. That law needs to be changed even if we go to a referendum," he explained.

He was speaking on behalf of other governors, among them Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) and Mwangi Wa Iria (Murang'a).

Following the fatal crash, Dr Gakuru was rushed to Thika Level 5 hospital awaiting transfer to a Nairobi Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

His driver and the bodyguard who were in the vehicle were also seriously injured in the accident.

Nyeri Senator Ephraim Maina described the late Gakuru as a kind man who had the interests of Nyeri at heart.

"He was a hardworking man who had a good plan for Nyeri County. He was committed to cleaning the system and it is sad that we have lost him. We thank God for the time we had with him," stated Mr Maina.
