On Thursday, April 25, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei raised concerns in Parliament regarding the condition of the Nairobi Expressway and Mombasa Road.

In his inquiries directed to the Ministry of Transport, the Senator highlighted the insufficient road markings and signs on both thoroughfares.

He lamented that the contractor responsible for recarpeting Mombasa Road had not yet reinstated all the necessary road signs.

Cherergei expressed that the absence of road signs posed a significant risk to motorists' lives.

The senator noted that road markings were crucial given that they guide motorists on the road and help mitigate road accidents.

A probe will be conducted by the Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing with a report filed on the same.

"The Committee should provide reasons for the lack of proper markings and adequate signages on major roads and highways in Kenya, which has been linked to several reported accidents across the country.

"Explain why the contractor did not redraw the necessary road markings on the Mombasa Road lower deck or the previous Mombasa Road after recarpeting," he sought to know.

Notably, the move by the senator comes after Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen directed various road agencies such as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to ensure that all roads are properly marked.

"Relevant road agencies are instructed to immediately undertake road markings, install necessary furniture and put in place measures to remove stalled vehicles.

"Additionally, they are required to mount speed calming measures and ensure black spots are attended to," Murkomen directed on April 9.

Murkomen's Ministry is yet to give a status report on the progress of the exercise.
