Government Announces Date of Swearing-in New Nyeri Governor

The Government has announced that Nyeri Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga will be sworn in as the new county boss on Thursday, November 9.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, Nyeri Information County Executive Committee (CEC) Muthui Kariuki stated that Kahiga will be sworn in during a brief ceremony in the afternoon at the governor's yard.

“That is the date we have agreed on so that we can proceed with the activities of the county,” Kariuki stated.

Kahiga is set to take over as the new Nyeri boss following the death of Governor Wahome Gakuru.

Mr Gakuru was killed in a grisly accident on Tuesday morning after his car rammed into a barrier at Makenji along Thika road, Muranga County.

The deceased is set to be buried on Saturday, November 18, at his home in Kirichu, Nyeri County.

Earlier this year, another Nyeri Governor, Nderitu Gachagua, passed on while receiving treatment at a London Hospital.

Gachagua’s position was taken over by his deputy, Samuel Wamathai, who lost the seat to Gakuru during the August General Election.

On Tuesday, Nairobi's Mike Sonko declared that the law on the succession of governors in the event of death needed to be changed.

"Like in this case, I'm told the deputy governor could be sworn in tomorrow. That law needs to be changed even if we go to a referendum," Sonko explained.
