"His unwavering commitment and service were exemplary and self-evident,” stated Kenyatta in his message to the family.

Kenyatta added that Nyeri County had been robbed of a great leader with great promise.

“Governor Gakuru had huge plans. Nyeri, to show its respect for this great man, must stand by his plans, and implement them,” added the President.

Other top leaders who accompanied the President included; ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru – who is co-chairing a national committee responsible for funeral plans - Nyeri County Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu.

Dr. Gakuru died in a road accident on Tuesday morning this week on his way to Nairobi from Nyeri.

The late Governor, a towering figure in public life and academia, was the founding director of Vision 2030.

He held a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Arizona State University and previously taught at the University of Nairobi.
