Sh5 Million Property Destroyed in Dormitory Fire [PHOTOS]

Property worth Sh5 Million was on Monday destroyed following a fire that engulfed two dormitories at Michuki Technical Training Institute in Kangema Constituency, Murang’a County.

The Principal of the Institute, Mr John Gitonga Ndirangu, told the nation that the fire broke out when students and faculty were holding prayers ahead of the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) exams that were set for Wednesday.

According to the principal, the fire caused the prayer session to end prematurely after they noticed dark smoke emanating from the dormitories section.

“We were in the middle of prayers when some students started screaming after noticing an enormous smoke coming from the direction of the dormitories that accommodates 72 students,” Mr Ndirangu explained.

He stated that they cut the meeting short and commenced on efforts to put out the fire noting that they were not fortunate to salvage anything from the Obama Hostels.

Luckily, no student was injured in the fire as they were all outside when the fire broke out.

He thanked the Murang'a County Fire Brigade for their quick response and eventually putting out the fire.

“The school has 1,070 students and we have no capacity to accommodate the affected students. I urge the government, local leaders, and well-wishers to come to our rescue,” Mr Ndirangu conveyed.

The cause of the fire is not known.

However, Kangema OCPD Cosmas Wachang’oka assured that investigations into the cause of the fire had been launched.
