Man Charged in Court For Marrying 2 Wives

A man was arraigned in a Nairobi court on Thursday and charged with marrying a second wife.

Abdulaziz Mohammed Abdul was accused of the crime of entering into another marriage while still legally married to another woman.

It is alleged that on November 19, 2010, Mr Abdul entered into an Islamic marriage with Wahida Nuhr Muhammed despite being married to Priti Khimji Vadgama.

He wrongfully married another woman despite knowing that his wife is still alive and that their marriage was monogamous.

If the Court finds the offender guilty, he will be imprisoned for a maximum of one year.

The prosecution further told the court that Abdulaziz is likely to face assault charges against the complaining wife when the charges are due.

Nonetheless, appearing before Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Njagi, Abdulaziz denied the bigamy charges placed before him.

He was released on a bond of Sh50,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh 30,000.

The case will be mentioned on November 20, 2017.

A person commits the offence of bigamy when he is legally married and when he or she purports to marry another person, who is not his or her partner.
