New Alcohol Drinking Age to Be Set At 21

A new bill is set to be tabled in the Kiambu County Assembly that will make it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 years to purchase or consume alcohol.

Currently, the legal drinking age is 18 years.

Governor Ferdinand Waititu hopes to use the Kiambu County Alcoholic Drink Control Bill 2017 to curb the alcohol menace in the county.

If the bill is passed, it will make it illegal for anyone to sell, supply or provide an alcoholic drink to anyone under the age of 21.

Those found contravening the law will be liable, upon conviction, to a Sh 150,000 fine or face a one-year stint in prison.

The bill is supposed to replace the Kiambu County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act 2013.

If it becomes law, alcohol dealers will also be barred from allowing anyone under 21 years to gain access to areas where alcohol is manufactured, sold or consumed.

Any person who goes against the provision will be liable to pay a Sh 250,000 fine or serve a one-year jail term.

The proposed law also contains hefty penalties for those found selling, consuming or distributing illegal alcohol.

If found selling adulterated alcohol, you will be liable to pay a Sh 500,000 fine or serve a two-year prison sentence.

The proposed bill also creates zones where alcohol cannot be sold along with an enforcement committee to ensure the regulations are followed.
