Unknown robbers on Sunday night broke into Kenya Commerical Bank (KCB) Thika branch and stole Sh50 Million.

The branch manager, Samuel Ng'anga, indicated that he realized the money had been stolen on Monday morning when conducting a routine check on the strong room.

"I opened the strong room only to find that it had been broken into earlier and cash stolen," he stated.

Police in Thika have launched an investigation into the robbery that led to the huge loss of money.

According to the preliminary investigations, the robbers accessed the lender's vault strong room through a huge underground tunnel and stole the money stored in two safes.

They are believed to have used an oxyacetylene flame to drill holes into two safes at the KCB branch.

"The robbers must have had an informer working at the bank who guided them into where the safes are kept. So far no suspect has been arrested. Investigations are ongoing," Thika Deputy police commander Mr Bernard Ayoo stated

Through its Twitter account, the bank confirmed the break in indicating that relevant authorities have been informed and investigations are ongoing.

"We wish to assure all our customers that their funds are safe and there is no cause for alarm. Customers seeking to transact can do so at any other KCB branch or access services through our mobile and internet banking platforms," the statement read.

Three people have since been arrested in connection with the robbery with police indicating that digging of the tunnel used to access the bank could have started in June.
