Ezekiel Mutua Takes Sauti Sol to Court Over New Song

Kenya Film Classification Board Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezekiel Mutua has condemned Sauti Sol’s new song, Melanin, featuring Nigeria’s Patoranking calling it “absolute pornography”.

He described the video as “scatological, intellectual incapacitation and a tragedy of monumental proportions” and threatened to seek a court injunction barring the song from being aired.

Mr Mutua, who was christened by netizens as Kenya’s moral police, expressed his disappointment with the band stating that they were gifted but had run out of ideas.

“I have watched the video, the scenes are inappropriate and it’s full of nudity, obscenity and it should be saved for a watershed period,” Mr Mutua lamented.

“Sauti Sol is taking the wrong direction, defying the norms and expectations of the society, they don’t know that they can still be famous without being obscene,” he added.

Mr Mutua ascertained that he would forward the song to experts on the board to classify it even though Sauti Sol were yet to submit it for classification.

“The elements that we look at are the frequency, intensity, nudity, and obscenity and Sauti sol’s is adult rated,” the KFCB boss clarified.

The CEO, described by a section of Kenyans as the censor-in-chief, further criticised the band for not learning a lesson barely three years after their song ‘Nishike’ song caused an uproar leading to it being banned.

“Nishike was also condemned, Kenya is not a religious state but over 80% of Kenyans are conservatives, you cannot watch that song, it is not suitable for family viewing” Mr Mutua stated.

Mr Mutua advised the band to compose romantic songs without being immoral, further accusing them of releasing the controversial video with an intent of gaining fame.

The band released the song on November 20 and it got positive reviews since it celebrated black women. The song got an impressive 158,000 views in less than 24 hours.
