The Truth on Raila Being Spied on in Zanzibar

The Tanzanian government has issued new details on reports of spying on National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga during his stay in Zanzibar.

This came after claims surfaced on social media that three National Intelligence Service (NIS) officers were arrested in Tanzania on Thursday.

Nonetheless, the Tanzanian government has denied the allegations that it is holding three individuals suspected to be Kenyan NIS officials.

Tanzania's Inspector General of Police, Simon Sirro, stated that they had not arrested any NIS official in the country.

“I’m not aware of that and what is being speculated about is not true,” he clarified.

The three government officials are said to have been tracing the movement of Mr Odinga who was in Zanzibar earlier this week

Mr Odinga spent a four-day break on the archipelago off the coast of Tanzania.

He jetted back in the country on Wednesday evening after the trip which started on Sunday night but details on why he visited the island remained unclear.

Odinga’s long term-advisor, Salim Lone, while speaking to the London New York Times, stated that unrest in the country forced Mr Odinga to fly to Zanzibar.

"The unrest pushed Odinga out of the country. He left Kenya and is now in Zanzibar, off the coast of mainland Tanzania,” Mr Lone stated.
