Police Release Contrasting Report on People Killed After Uhuru's Court Victory

The Police on Friday released a new report indicating the total number of people killed after the Supreme Court ruling that upheld President Uhuru Kenyatta's win.

Through the spokesperson George Kinoti, the Police noted that four people died and eight others were injured in the violence that erupted in some parts of Nairobi and Nyanza.

Mr Kinoti noted that three police officers were among the eight individuals injured.

He cited an incident where Police on standby at Ayany, Kibra, spotted five youth breaking into a house.

"When the officers challenged them, one of them drew a homemade pistol and fired at the officers who responded and fatally injured him," he stated.

Another death occurred in Gatwekera, also in Kibera slums, where a 65-year-old woman was shot while in her house.

"It was not established where the bullet was fired from as at this time, some youth were firing at police officers. The matter is under investigation,”  the report noted.

According to the findings, another death occurred in Kariobangi when a police officer shot in defence after being hit by a machete while responding to an attempted robbery at a private residence.

Another person was also seriously injured and succumbed in hospital in Migori town during a confrontation between Police and rioters who were barricading roads and the main bridge.

The Police boss further noted that anti-riot officers successfully handled other violent incidents that erupted.

“The protests took an ethnic dimension. They profiled their targets and attacked business perceived to belong to non-locals. In all situations police restored calm and cleared roads,” the statement read.
