Court Rules On MP Alice Wahome's Case

The Murang'a High Court has on Saturday dismissed a petition challenging the election of Kandara MP Alice Wahome.

The petition filed by Ms Sarah Wambui, a Kandara voter, accused the legislator of committing numerous electoral offenses before, during and during the general elections.

Ms Wambui wanted the court to order a vote recount or a repeat election or, alternatively, to declare Ms. Wahome’s rival, Phillip Njuguna, the winner.

Wahome garnered 48,925 votes against Njuguna’s 31,784.

The legislature was in the limelight during the repeat Presidential election after she had a confrontation with the Returning Officer (RO) over changes to the constituency's Form 34B.

The commission issued a complaint following the harassment of the official and demanded that action be taken against her.

Ms Wahome defended herself, claiming that she wanted to verify the results of Jubilee Party candidate Uhuru Kenyatta and that a whole stream of 440 votes had not been included.

The High Courts have heard and determined 50 out of 308 election and party-list petitions submitted after the August general election.

Ms. Wahome’s case makes one of the 44 others dismissed by the High Court and Magistrate Courts.

The Vice Chairman of Judiciary Committee on Election Justice, David Majanja mentioned on Thursday that they target to hear and determine all cases by the end of December.
