15 MCAs Rushed to Hospital After Being Poisoned

Fifteen Members of County Assembly from Migori County were on Sunday rushed to hospital after what doctors described as a food poisoning incident in Mombasa County.

The ward representatives were taken to various private hospitals suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting.

A doctor who treated the MCAs told the media that the county officials were treated food poisoning.

"Basically, this means that the food they ate was not cooked well that is why they suffered from food poisoning. We treated quite a number of them who thought it was cholera but we confirmed it's not," the doctor was quoted by Nation.

The victims were treated at Nyali Healthcare, Oasis Hospital in Mtwapa and at an AAR clinic where other ward representatives were also vaccinated against cholera.

Makerero Ward MCA, Joseph Hoyo confessed that he had indulged in meat, chicken, fish, rice and chapati at a hotel in the city on Saturday together with his counterparts.

"We were booked at a hotel in Mombasa for three days induction. We were 57 MCAs but only 15 MCAs were affected. I almost died due to diarrhoea and vomiting. I was the most affected. The rest were afraid of me; they thought I had cholera," he added.

Mr Hoyo stated that he wasn't willing to take any chances and had demanded his medical report to be taken to his private doctor in Nairobi.

"I have booked a flight to Nairobi. I want to go for further medical examination," he conveyed.

On the other hand, Masaba MCA William Abedi who did not fall ill attributed the incident to food contamination.

"We used to do our meetings in this hotel and nobody had ever experienced such. Those who didn't take lunch or dinner at the hotel were not affected, that is how we are saved," Mr Abedi told the Nation.

He stated that four of the admitted MCAs were in critical condition adding that they would be airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment.

"The four are Caroline Okere, Gerishon Owii, Joseph Mugosi Hoyo and Nildad Bagane. They are fatigued and dehydrated," he disclosed.
