4 National Schools in Nairobi That Will Have Day Scholars

When Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i released the 2017 KCPE examination results last week, all top students were assured of slots in national schools.

The top student, Goldalyn Kakuya, got a place at Kenya High School in Nairobi while others cried foul after missing out on their dream schools.

In a bid to accommodate more students in national schools, the Ministry of Education announced that top institutions such as Nairobi School, Lenana School, St George's Girls and Moi Girls Nairobi will open day wings from January.

The plan is meant to delink admission to bed space and increase enrolment to above 1 million students.

During the release of the KCPE results, the Ministry announced that all the 993,718 candidates who sat the examination would join Form One.

The new figure marks a 25 percent  rise from 790,680 students who were admitted to secondary schools last year.

The Ministry stated that the opening of day wings in boarding schools would start in Nairobi before being introduced to other counties.

Sh25 Billion has so far been allocated for the free secondary education until June though there are concerns over inadequate teachers, classrooms and sub-standard teaching methods.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang on Thursday did not disclose details of how the programme would be implemented but stated that negotiations with stakeholders were at an advanced level.
