Class 3 Boy Hangs Himself After Losing Card Game

A Standard Three pupil on Saturday committed suicide by hanging himself after losing a game of cards in Kilifi County.

Silas Charo (9) hanged himself in his room using a rope after a game of cards with his friends in Mtondia Village.

The Mtondia Primary School pupil took his life days before his 10th birthday.

The father of the boy, Erastus Charo, stated that Silas was his last born and noted that the boy went home crying after he lost the game.

“His mother had told me of her plans to buy him a cake and all the preparations were set only for me to get a call that he had committed suicide,” Mr Charo told the Nation.

He explained that the boy got upset after losing the game where he had to surrender his cashew nuts to the winner.

“His friends refused to give him back his cashew nuts when he requested for them even after he lost the game. I wonder why he decided to kill himself. Everyone is shocked here," he conveyed.

Mr Charo added that the mother was in the house cooking when the boy committed suicide.

“His sister was sleeping in their room but went out leaving the boy and that was when he hanged himself,” narrated the father.

Kilifi OCPD Alexander Makau confirmed the incident, stating that they had begun investigations into the matter.

“The information we have is that the boy committed suicide as he was found hanging in the room but our investigations are on to establish what exactly happened,” he stated.

He added that the body had been taken to Kilifi Hospital Mortuary.
