Details of Deal That Made Waiguru 2nd in Command

Details have emerged on the intrigues that characterized the Council of Governors' (CoG) meeting that saw Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok retain his seat as Chairman with Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru as his Deputy.

Nanok will stay on as Chairman for six months before Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya, President Uhuru Kenyatta's preferred choice, takes over.

Both will be deputized by Governor Waiguru.

The Deputy Chairperson's position did not exist during the tenures of former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, Former Meru Governor Peter Munya and Nanok's initial term.

The Governors decided to go the consensus route after realizing that an election could leave the group seriously divided.

This is because Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago threw his hat into the ring, a move that threatened to split the Jubilee vote.

He eventually withdrew his candidature.

At a State House Meeting that followed the August 8 election, President Kenyatta endorsed Mvurya for the position.

Nanok, however, reportedly has the backing of a high-level Jubilee official.

Despite being elected on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, he has pledged to work with President Kenyatta's administration.
