Nakumatt Lifestyle Closed

One of Nakumatt's famous outlets - Nakumatt Lifestyle - in Nairobi's Central Business District was closed on Friday morning after being evicted.

The landlord of the premise complained that the supermarket had defaulted on rent for a while leading to this extreme measure.

The supermarket located along Monrovia Street was one of Nairobi's 'cool joints' during its glory days but has suffered tremendous losses over the years.

In October, Nakumatt shut down its Westgate Mall located in Westlands Nairobi, which was the fourth key branch to be closed down in less than three months.

Earlier this year, the retailer shut its Ronald Ngala branch citing low sales and a branch in Uganda that had accumulated rent arrears estimated at about Sh8.5 Million.

It also shut down one of its two warehouses – where it stored imported goods as well as furniture and electronics on Mombasa Road.

In May, Nakumatt publicly announced plans to close its poorly performing branches in Kenya and Uganda as part of cost-cutting measures aimed at saving the retailer Sh1.5 Billion annually.

The announcement saw the Haile Selassie branch located at the Kenyatta University Plaza closed down.

In August, the retailer shut down its Thika Road Mall (TRM) branch, barely a month after closing its outlet at the NextGen Mall on Mombasa Road.

Tuskys came to the rescue of the supermarket in November by restocking some of its branches.
