Kikuyu Leaders Divided Over Cabinet Appointments

A section of Kikuyu leaders have rubbished reports that President Uhuru Kenyatta should reward the community with cabinet slots in the next few days.

Kiama Kia Ma, through its secretary general Patrick Muiru, stated that Kikuyus should not expect any special favours from the Jubilee administration simply because of proximity to President Kenyatta.

“We expect cabinet appointments to reflect the face and competence of Kenyans.

“Like other Kenyans we only expect just delivery of service and opportunities," stated Mr Muiru in a statement.

His sentiments come just a day after Kikuyu Council of Elders advised the Head of State to reward the community for its overwhelming support in the Presidential election by appointing its members to the cabinet.

Led by Secretary-General Rev Peter Munga, the elders stated that Central Kenya had backed President Kenyatta's re-election bid and therefore deserved to feature prominently in the new cabinet.

Rev Munga told President Kenyatta that they would not accept appointments that pointed to what they termed entrenched 'marginalization of the majority'.

Also, the elders advised Mr Kenyatta not to shy away from triggering by-elections by appointing elected leaders with public service track records to his cabinet.

On Sunday, the President revealed that he would name his new cabinet in the next few weeks but cautioned that they would be required to uphold integrity and serve the nation without bias.

The Head of State while giving his New Year message to the nation stated that Kenyans deserve good leadership and promised to continue with his record of delivery.

"In the next few weeks, I will unveil the men and women to whom I will entrust delivery of the Big Four, and other programmes that will transform this country," revealed Mr Kenyatta.
