Parents Beat Up Headmaster Over Poor Results

The headteacher of Uradi Primary School in Kisumu West is nursing serious injuries after angry parents stormed the school and gave him a thorough beating over poor examination results.

Yonah Oyugi was attacked in the full glare of pupils on grounds that he was mismanaging the institution.

The incident took place during a meeting to discuss pertinent issues at the school but tempers boiled over after Oyugi was accused of abusing pupils and their parents.

The Standard reports that parents demanded the immediate removal of the teacher after the top student scored 238 marks out of a possible 500 in the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

27 candidates sat for the examination and only four scored over 200 marks. The last candidate got 87 marks.

“Since he took over in 2010, the school’s performance has continually dropped.

"In last year’s exams, not even a single student scored the average 250 marks, with the majority scoring below 170 marks,” stated one of the parents.

This comes even as Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i  on Wednesday announced that the 8-4-4 education system would be completely phased out in 2027.

Addressing the media at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), CS Matiang'i explained that the government would enforce the new education system using a gradual phased-in approach.

"It will take us until 2027 to actually phase out the 8-4-4 system because we have adopted the gradual system of implementation which takes time and we don't want to rush it," he stated.

He added that the programme for the rollout of new school curriculum was on course with designs already sent out to schools in the pilot programme.

"We began the roll-out using a national pilot programme. We trained 170,000 teachers to ensure the program is successfully implemented," he stated.
