Police Arrest, Torture Citizen Journalist

A Royal Media journalist experienced the wrath of Police on Friday after he was arrested, mercilessly beaten and detained for eight hours when he had gone to make an inquiry at Malindi Station.

Radio Citizen's Zomolo Wanje met the brutality when he went to find out why his sibling had been arrested at around 1 am.

"On hearing about the incident, I decided to go straight to the station to inquire about what had transpired. An officer opened the gate. Other police officers who were in a Land Cruiser called me as I headed to the report office," he narrated.

On arrival, he explained that he was questioned by a police on why he was at the station and before he responded, he was slapped and ordered to report the matter to the office.

Mr Wanje further explained that the officer who slapped him followed him and he was immediately locked up.

"The officer made an entry in the occurrence book, took my mobile phone and switched it off before releasing my brother," he conveyed.

Attempts by his brother to secure his release were futile as he was allegedly threatened if he failed to leave the premises.

He noted that his colleagues finally intervened adding: “In the morning, an officer called Deno came and asked the one on duty to give me my phone. I found many people had called."

He made a call to OCPD Matawa Muchangi who referred him to OCS Stephen Mwachia and was eventually released.

He, however, noted that Police have apologised and promised to take action against the officer who assaulted him.
