Interior CS Fred Matiang'i Dismisses Gazette Notice Declaring Tuesday a Public Holiday

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga is set to be sworn-in on January 30 and word went round that it might be a public holiday.

On Wednesday, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i dismissed the rumour, urging Kenyans to go about their normal routine.

"The Public is advised to disregard the contents of this document that is being circulated on social media. It is FAKE," stated Matiang'i.

Mwenda Njoka, the spokesman for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, echoed the same sentiments saying there was no public holiday.

This is after a fake Gazette Notice had been shared on some social media platforms.

"The purported Kenya Gazette being distributed on social media claiming that Interior CS Matiang'i has declared Tuesday next week a holiday is fake news.

"Kenyans should ignore it and go about their normal duties uninterrupted," stated Mr Njoka.

On Wednesday, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko ordered the temporary closure of Uhuru Park to the public from January 23, the same venue that was set to be used by Odinga for his inauguration.

In an advertisement published in local dailies on Wednesday, County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat wrote that the closure was meant to allow for 'phased improvement works in order to enhance recreational usefulness to its visitors'.

He further stated that the declaration would be in place until further notice.

In response, NASA maintained that the swearing-in plan scheduled for January 30 is still on course despite the closure of the venue.

Earlier this week, it emerged that the Nairobi Business Community group had already applied to the county to use the venue on the same day.

Led by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and Chairman Wilfred Kamau, the group announced that it would conduct a free medical camp at the venue.

In their own words, the camp would "target street boys who wish to get circumcised and will not pay for the minor surgery".
