IEBC Responds to NASA's 2017 Presidential Results Announcement

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday responded to National Super Alliance (NASA)'s declaration of their presidential results during the August 8 elections.

Issuing a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, IEBC Acting Chairperson Connie Maina, dismissed the claims by the Opposition coalition terming them as a deliberate effort to create a non-existent reality.

"The commission is aware that NASA has released information purporting to be the actual presidential results of the August 8th, 2017 presidential election. We note that this is not the first time such claims have been made.

"A cursory review of what NASA made public today, reveals a total misunderstanding of how the results system worked in the August 8th Elections. The presentation by NASA totally misleads the public on the results pathway, the servers, information on the public portal and the forms used to declare results.

"We can only conclude that this is a deliberate effort to create a non- existent reality about the elections of 2017," Ms Maina stated.

The commission acknowledged that after the elections, NASA had released their own results on August 10 which they (IEBC) had proved to be wrong.

"Indeed, on August 10th, 2017 NASA presented to the commission figures allegedly obtained from IEBC servers showing that Raila Odinga had won the election. The commission ably debunked this myth and that remains to be in public domain," the statement further read.

IEBC concluded: "It is our hope that Kenyans will be directed towards factual information to enable them to make informed choices. This is the only way we can build strong democratic institutions and perfect our processes."

In the results released by NASA on Friday, Siaya Senator James Orengo stated that Raila got 8.1 million votes compared to Uhuru's 7.9 million.

"This is it. This is the document that contains results of the election in 2017, in which more than 80 percent of Kenyans participated," he conveyed on Friday.
