Raila's Swearing-in was Like 'Kalongolongo' - Raphael Tuju

Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju referred to National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga's swearing-in as Kalongolongo - a make-belief game where children take up household responsibilities such as cooking.

Speaking during the funeral of former Ambassador Rateng' Ogego's mother in Rarieda, Siaya County, Tuju described the oath taken by the former Prime Minister as a mockery and inconsequential to the country's progress.

"When I was a kid I used to play ‘kalongolongo’. Now that I have grown up you don't expect me to play the same game. The swearing in was like ‘kalongolongo’," he told the mourners.

His sentiments angered the mourners who heckled the Jubilee leader forcing him to cut his speech short.

Some of the irate residents walked out of the funeral and did not return terming the statement an insult to Odinga.

Tuju who was appointed to Uhuru's cabinet as a CS without a portfolio was not harmed as he had a heavy security detail with him.

The game- Kalongolongo was popular among kids where they would come together and decide to be a one of a number of things.

The children would simulate scenarios based on their life experiences such as a classroom setting with a teacher and pupils, a family sitting for dinner, a preacher with his congregation during a service and even a politician addressing a rally during campaigns.

The game as most people would remember was very fun.

Due to its relatability, the term kalongolongo is an effective phrase to tell somebody to snap back to reality as Kenyan rapper Juliani put it in his Hela track:

"Unaingia kwa marriage, sex iwe legal, we hii si kalongolongo (If you enter into a marriage so that you can have sex, you have to be careful because it is not a child's game)," Juliani states.
