This comes just two weeks after 10 students sustained serious injuries and 22 others left with minor injuries after an accident involving two school buses along the Kisii- Kijauri road.

The accident occurred after Nyanchwa secondary school bus with 50 students lost control and hit Nyamonyo secondary school bus before it overturned.

The students in both buses were traveling to Mwongori secondary school in Nyamira County for an academic trip.

According to Keroka traffic commandant Litabul Kochalle, the Nyanchwa bus tried to overtake the other one on a sharp corner when it hit it from behind before overturning.

In a bid to ensure the safety of school-going children, earlier this year CS Fred Matiang'i ordered all schools to paint their buses yellow by March.

Matiang’i further emphasised the need for schools to observe the 6am-6pm operations rule saying that this will go along in helping protect the students.

Last year, MPs passed Traffic (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which requires all school buses to be of this colour.

The Bill requires institution names written in black and that the vehicles have all prescribed signage. The law further proposes that the buses be fitted with safety belts designed for use by children.

These were part of changes aimed at improving the safety of pupils and teachers who use the vehicles.
