Nyali Residents Loot as Nakumatt is Thrown Out over Rent

A looting spree was witnessed at Nakumatt Nyali after the troubled retailer was thrown out by auctioneers over rent arrears.

The supermarket had been ordered by the High Court on Tuesday to vacate the premises with immediate effect over Sh27.8 Million rent arrears.

This saw auctioneers descend on the premises on Wednesday morning throwing out goods from the supermarket.

Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the goods had been thrown on the streets outside the perimeter wall of Mombasa City Mall.

In the ensuing scuffle, residents took advantage and looted the goods ferrying them using bags and the supermarket's trolleys.

Despite the presence of private security guards, the looters appeared undeterred.

Reports by The Standard indicated that another client was eyeing the premises.

The retailer chain that is facing a financial crisis has been previously evicted from Garden City, Thika Road Mall, Hazina Towers (Nakumatt Lifestyle), Junction Mall and Nanyuki Mall.

The Nanyuki Mall eviction in January followed a breach of the lease agreement and residents equally took advantage looting the premises.
