Acting KNH CEO, 3 Board Members Chased Away by MPs

Acting Kenyatta National Hospital CEO Thomas Mutie was on Wednesday chased away by Members of Parliament after he was summoned to address the surgery mix-up that took place on February 19.

The National Assembly Health Committee sent away Muite alongside three other members for failing to come with the entire Board.

On Wednesday morning, three KNH employees faced the Committee and explained in details what happened during the brain surgery mishap.

A nurse identified only as Mary stated there were 15 patients in the ward on that day and she called out a patient, John Nderitu, who responded but "seemed very confused".

"He agreed. After that, I requested the patient to cooperate with us," she stated, noting that the man was taken to the theatre at 10 pm on that day and received by the trauma theatre nurse Catherine Gakii.

However, Mary noted that at around 2 am the following day, a nurse asked her if she had taken a patient by the name Nderitu to the theatre.

At 6:30 am, another colleague, Miriam Bera, asked her the same question when she noticed something was off and informed the nurse that she had taken the wrong patient to theatre.

Mary further stated that she spoke to scrub nurse Gladys Wanjala and Esther Muchiri who was in charge of the floor.

"Muchiri proceeded to the trauma theatre and talked to Gakii. At that point, Gakii decided to hold a 'small' meeting with us, doctors and the people in charge of the surgery," she stated.

Doctor Hudson Ng'ang'a, who operated on the patient, affirmed that the patient was confused and disorientated adding they confirmed with the ward and the nurses that Nderitu was the right patient for the surgery.
