Office to Be Established to Implement Uhuru-Raila Unity Pact - ODM Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen

A new position will be formed in Government following the unity pact between President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga earlier in the month.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen on Sunday disclosed that an office would be created to oversee the implementation of the contents of the pact between the two leaders.

"In order to give flesh to and breathe life into the foregoing, the two leaders have committed to roll out a programme for the implementation of this initiative. An office and a standing panel of advisors will be established for the purpose," the statement read in part.

In the statement titled Unpacking the Memorandum Between Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta, the ODM boss refuted claims that the handshake was the beginning of a power-sharing deal between the duo.

"This initiative, however, as about Kenya and Kenyans - not personal aggrandisement of individuals," Ong'wen explains.

On reports that the agreement was a coalition agreement between NASA or ODM with Jubilee, he clarified: "Jubilee Party will continue playing its role as the Majority Party while ODM continues as the Minority Party in Parliament. But the Memorandum has created an environment where the parties can discuss with each other instead of talking at each other."

He further conveyed that the pact was not about 2022 electoral contest and neither was it a state-driven project.

Ong'wen stated that the agreement was a personal commitment between the two leaders and final closure of the 2017 electoral contest.

In his statement, he revealed that some of the issues to be addressed included: ethnic antagonism and competition in the country.

"The two leaders decry the lack of national identity among Kenyans and commit to creating a country where we feel connected beyond just sharing residency in a country," he stated.

Other issues they will look into are inclusivity, devolution, divisive elections, safety and security, corruption, shared prosperity and Kenyans rights and responsibilities.
