Education Ministry Asked to Investigate School Over Swimming Pool Project

Parents of Murang'a High School are up in arms after they were asked to contribute Sh40,000 each for a swimming pool and a new bus, and have asked the Ministry of Education to investigate the school and take the necessary action.

They have vowed not to pay the new fees terming them exorbitant and unnecessary.

The school plans to raise Sh45 Million from parents before a fundraising event scheduled for April 6.

The parents maintained that they were not consulted when the decision was made.

"The school has been asking us to pay extra money each year... money that is not in the fee structure released by the ministry. This is a punishment to parents who are already struggling to keep their children in school," stated an unnamed parent.

The parents have been meeting at the school throughout the week where management has been on their necks over the contribution.

The school's principal, Willy Kuria, explained that the parents had been given a target they had to meet before the fundraiser.

"We have only summoned those who had not returned cards they were given to help collect money from the public," he stated.

He denied claims that parents were being forced to contribute.
