Interior CS Fred Matiang'i Creates Special Police Unit to Serve Nyamira and Kisii Counties

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i created a special police unit that would only serve his home county of Nyamira and neighbouring Kisii County.

Speaking when he gave the executive order, the CS lamented that the security officials in the area had slackened on their responsibility.

Dr Matiang'i expressed concern over the increased number of abductions and murders in the area, highlighting the case of a particular elderly woman.

60-year-old Esther Oyugi was abducted from her home in early March and a chief was charged as one of the suspects in the abduction and possible murder.

The elderly woman's body was yet to be recovered when Dr Matiang'i created the special unit.

Frederick Nyambati, one of the suspects in the case, told police that they had been hired at Ksh2,500 to kill the woman. He, however, claimed that he was left out when the alleged execution happened and as such did not know where the woman had been buried by his counterparts.

The CS was angered by the high number of such cases that were yet to be resolved. The unsolved cases pushed him to involve the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The specialised detectives were also tasked to investigate a new criminal gang going by the tag "sungu sungu".

Residents accused the criminal group of executing its own form of justice instead of aiding in community policing as it was formed for that purpose.

One of the residents of the area accused the police of collaborating with the criminals noting: "Some officers at the station think they are untouchable. The government must crack the whip otherwise we are going to lose more lives and property."
