Kenyan Boxer Brian Agina Goes Missing in Gold Coast Australia

Kenyan boxer Brian Agina has gone missing in Gold Coast, Australia, after the conclusion of the 21st Edition of the Commonwealth Games.

Australian police and Kenyan authorities on Monday confirmed that they were looking for Agina who lost to Pakistan’s Syed Muhammad Asif in the round of 16 in the boxing tournament.

Boxing Association of Kenya president John Kameta, who spoke to Citizen Digital, stated that Agina (18) went missing from the Athletes Village on Sunday night.

Kameta stated that the young boxer left the camp without any identification after he had borrowed Ksh10,000 from Olympian Ben Gicharu to buy headsets.

"It was discovered today (Monday) morning that one of our players was missing. The search began immediately and the coaches also reported to the CDM and also called me.

“He has left his big bag in the village. Yesterday when I came to the village I was denied access. He (Agina) was a little bit worried about his performance but I talked and encouraged him since he is still young and has a bright future ahead.

“We still have his passport with us. It has become a challenge for us to deal with civilian boxers. We thought holding their passports would prevent them from running way but that is not possible. We need to get a way to deal with them,” Kameta was quoted.

Earlier in the week, Cameroonian authorities confirmed that eight of their team members had disappeared as the games were taking place.

Three weightlifters and five boxers went missing in a space of three days.

At the conclusion of the games, Kenya was at position 14 with 17 medals (4 Gold, 7 Silver and 6 Bronze).

Among the gold medals were in 1500M Women (Helen Obiri), 3000M SteepleChase (Conseslus Kipruto), 800M Men (Wycliffe Kinyamal)  and in 1500M Men (Elijah Manangoi).
