Day President Uhuru Supported Kalonzo Musyoka's Presidential Bid

Details have emerged on a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta declared his complete support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka's presidential bid.

In an in-depth article, Standard established that after the much contested presidential election in 2007, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was agreed upon to bring Mr Musyoka under the PNU outfit and in return, all members of the parties would support him for the presidency in the following polls.

According to former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama, part of the agreement in the MoU was that Kibaki and his team would support Kalonzo to succeed him in 2013.

"We agreed that Kibaki and PNU would not field a presidential candidate. This was an issue that even President Uhuru Kenyatta fully supported. He supported the idea of Kalonzo succeeding Kibaki,” claimed Muthama.

Muthama further divulged that the agreement was the first coalition government before the coalition of the grand coalition of Kibaki and Raila.

The legislator added: "The country was experiencing bloodshed and Kibaki needed to strengthen his position. He was the President but ODM had more MPs. He needed Kalonzo to balance the equation.”

However, Kalonzo was later betrayed by the former President by reneging on an agreement to support him to succeed as the Head of State.

The NASA principal also reiterated: "ODM-Kenya agreed to form an alliance with Kibaki’s PNU to form the PNU Alliance on condition that I was to be supported for the presidency in 2012. This was a negotiated position and not just an appointment.”

However, Muthama mentioned that the agreement was later scuttled by the International Criminal Court (ICC) cases against Uhuru and William Ruto

"When we escorted Uhuru and Ruto to the ICC in the Netherlands, the tone of PNU politicians changed. They turned the whole matter to be Raila’s making and told Kibaki to mobilise the PNU MPs to defend Uhuru,” Muthama stated, adding that Kibaki was in a dilemma.

Kibaki was then told that if he did not support Uhuru, the Mount Kenya people would view him as a traitor who had auctioned Jomo Kenyatta's son.

On his part, former Wiper chairman David Musila who has since fallen out with Kalonzo commented: "The alleged promise by Kibaki to support Kalonzo was not in the deal. If there was any such deal it must have been made in their private discussions."

His sentiments were reiterated by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, who was in PNU in 2008, alleging that there was no deal on Kibaki supporting Kalonzo for the presidency.
