Reports indicate that the family of Matiba is still waiting for the compensation that has since increased to more than Ksh1 billion more than six months after the High Court awarded him for the torture he suffered during former President Daniel Moi reign.

The former Kiharu MP was awarded Ksh945 million for his unlawful detention in the early 1990s as well as interests accrued from the suit filed in 2014.

The amount has been accruing monthly penalties on delayed pay even as the government fights off the additional claim of Ksh135 million from the veteran politician for legal fees related to the multi-billion shilling suit.

Matiba, through his lawyers, had argued in court that he lost investments worth Ksh 5 billion following his detention in 1990.

Among some of the companies Matiba lost is the prestigious Hillcrest International Schools.

In a statement issued on Monday, Government Spokesperson Eric Kiraithe noted that a committee has been created in preparation for Matiba's death.

According to Kiraithe, the committee will be chaired by the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua who will ensure Matiba is given a deserving send off because of the role he played during the clamour of multi-partyism in the 1990s.
