ODM Accuses IEBC Commissioners of Covering Up for Chiloba

The Orange Democratic Movement on Wednesday accused the three Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners who resigned on Monday of covering up for CEO Ezra Chiloba.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday blamed the Secretariat for the annulled August 8, 2017 presidential election.

"Why would the three commissioners not allow for the investigations to be completed prior to resigning? What do they know? What are they running from?”  Sifuna questioned.

“The resignation of three commissioners ostensibly to protest the commencement of a disciplinary action against the CEO confirms our long-held fears that the rot at the IEBC goes to the very core of the organisation,” he added.

Sifuna called for Chiloba, his two deputies Marjan Hussein Marjan and Betty Nyabuto, ICT head James Muhati and head of operations Immaculate Kassait to be sacked.

ODM also backed the three-month suspension of Chiloba to pave way for investigations.

Additionally, Sifuna also called for a stakeholder forum to oversee the reconstitution of the embattled electoral commission and its Secretariat.

IEBC commissioners were alleged to be at loggerheads over tenders and the management of the electoral body.

Chiloba was sent on leave for three months, to pave way for investigations regarding the procurement of five tenders for the August General Election and the repeat presidential election on October 26.

IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati vowed to stay put at the electoral agency accusing the three commissioners who quit of failing to accommodate divergent views.
