Why Governor Mike Sonko Should Be Declared Unfit to Hold Office - MCA Reveals

A member of the county assembly sued Governor Mike Sonko in connection with the alleged loss of Ksh1.7 billion through irregular procurement of health services for staff and further asked the court to declare the county boss unfit to hold office.

Peter Imwatok, the assembly minority leader, filed the suit at the Anti-Corruption Court alleging that the Nairobi City County administration authorized irregular procurement in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 financial years.

“I'm seeking a declaration that Sonko, former county secretary Simon Morintant, and former finance chief Veska Kagongo are unfit to hold any public office,” Imwatok stated in the petition.

The Makongeni MCA further asked the court to issue an order allowing an audit of the financial books of the insurance company for the financial years 2015/16, 2016/17, and 2017/18.

He is also seeking an order to have all funds paid to the insurance company with respect to the two extensions of July 1, 2017, to September 30, 2017, and October 1, 2017, to December 31, 2017, returned to the county.

Imwatok also alleged that the Public Procurement Oversight Authority irregular authorized the release and payment of Ksh1.7 billion from Nairobi City County accounts to the insurance company.

The parties are set to appear in court on Tuesday for further directions.

The petition comes after MCAs had pledged their support for governor Sonko as he works to fulfill his promises to the city residents.

Majority chief whip Chege Mwaura had stated that they were elected alongside Sonko so they owe the people cooperation for the sake of proper services.

"What Nairobians want is for us to fix roads, drainage systems and collect waste within our wards. It is only through the Ward Development Fund that we can realize all this. The essence of devolution was to bring decision making to the local level," governor Sonko stated.
