The Kenya Meteorological Department cautioned Nairobi residents over very heavy rains projected across the county on Thursday, May 2.

According to the forecast, most estates within the city will receive rainfall between 40 to 100 millimetres.

Estates that will experience very heavy rainfall between 80-100 mm include Embakasi South, Roysambu, Kasarani, Starehe and Madaraka.

Other areas to receive between 60-80 mm today include Westlands and Dagoretti North.

On the other hand, Kibra and Ruaraka were projected to experience between 50-100mm of rainfall during the course of the day.

Kenyans were therefore urged to prepare in advance owing to the recent incidents of flooding.

Prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Nairobi based on Thursday's forecast," read the statement in part.

100mm: What Heavy Rainfall Means

"If 1mm of rain is like having 1 litre of water spread over a square meter, then 100mm of rain would be akin to having 100 litres of water covering that same square meter.

"It's a substantially larger amount of rainfall, and it can lead to significant wetness, and flooding," Kenya Met explained.

Impact

In recent days, Kenyans have lost their lives and property during the ongoing long rainy season. This is because of the floods that have marooned parts of the country.

On the other hand, the rains have also paralysed transportation given that sections of roads and highways have been swept away.

The expected heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning. The public is advised to avoid sheltering under trees and metallic structures to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

They are also advised to be cautious since the forecasted strong winds may damage roofs, trees, and billboards," Kenya Met cautioned.
