Lawyer Ahmednasir Questions MPs' Latest Trip to Saudi Arabia

Nairobi lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi on Wednesday questioned the latest trip by Members of Parliament to Saudi Arabia, suggesting that it was a waste of resources.

Through a tweet, the Senior Counsel appeared to take a dig at the leaders who were out for 'benchmarking'.

"$60 million on foreign travel is very easy. Back from Minnesota last night and straight to Riyadh...Benchmarking to see how to run a state without parliament," wrote Ahmednasir in a rather sarcastic manner.

Many Kenyans seemed to be in agreement with the lawyer as they condemned the trip as a waste of taxpayers money.

"God....Where did we go wrong. What's wrong with our leaders," posed one netizen.

"This kind of travels do not add value to the participants and attracts no value for the money. Mbadi who has been PAC chairman knows well what prudent resource usage requires, maybe it needs to be reversed to cut this wastage," lamented another.

"This trip will make sense if you come back with all Kenyans who are enslaved and suffering in the name of domestic work," directed another twitter user.

On Monday, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale revealed that Minority Leader John Mbadi and 11 other MPs from various committees would accompany Speaker Justin Muturi to Saudi Arabia on an official visit.

"We are going there on an official State invitation. It is the Speaker of Saudi Arabia that invited our speaker together with us this week," explained Mr Duale.

He further added that Kenya is a beneficiary of over Ksh24 Billion from the Arab Development Fund which was instrumental in the construction of a medical college in Chwele, Bungoma County, and the Nuno-Modogashe road project in Garissa County.

During the visit, the legislators are set to identify, study, and cooperate with their Saudi counterparts in the transfer of technologies used in the Middle East monarchy that has made the cost of housing affordable.

Mbadi, on the other hand, stated that the leaders would also discuss the safety of Kenyan workers who have in the past suffered mistreatment in the Middle East.

"We will also use the trip to bridge the political divide, being one of the first between Jubilee and Opposition MPs," he said.

Last month, former Gichugu MP Martha Karua urged Rwanda President Paul KagameYoweri Museveni (Uganda), John Magufuli (Tanzania) and Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya) to act quickly and curb the menace of human trafficking in East Africa.

This comes after a Ugandan girl, who was allegedly trafficked to Oman, died after immense torture.

"Our countries need to do something about this may be an EA collective @PaulKagame @UKenyatta @KagutaMuseveni @MagufuliJP," stated Karua.
