CS Fred Matiang'i, Amina Mohamed Sued by Transporters

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i and his Education counterpart Amina Mohamed were on Thursday sued by 28 transporters protesting the painting of all school buses yellow.

The complainants lamented that the government directive had paralysed their business of transporting students.

Several schools in Nairobi often hire private vehicles to transport pupils from their homes to school and back and the painting of buses has left them in a tight spot.

Earlier this year, a new circular emerged from the Ministry of Education giving specific rules to schools over the March 31 ultimatum issued by then Education CS Matiang'i.

The circular informed schools that the paint to be used must be chrome and unleaded.

Also, they were issued with the specific colour codes that should be used for the paint job.

The yellow must be “pantone solid coated 012c: C 1.75 percent M 12.23 percent Y 100 percent K0”.

The circular further informed school heads that the buses must be painted by a qualified painter.

The government had also restricted the movement of buses to between 6 am and 6 pm to reduce road carnage.

The new regulations are in line with the 2016 Traffic (Amendment) Bill passed by the National Assembly in 2017.
